Wire-eating Tree

Walking throught the woods I came upon this tree that is eating this old fence wire..perhaps it needs more iron in its nutrient uptake.

I just took a picture of a lock & chain affixed to a tree but the tree wasn't consuming it like this one is. Nice find.It's oddly interesting.
