Tonight I had the honor of hearing a discussion with Dr. John Carlos, who with Tommie Smith, raised a fist on the medal platform at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City to protest racism. The photo http://keepingscore.blogs.time.com/2012/10/16/john-carlos-looking-back-at-a-raised-fist-and-at-a-raised-consciousness/ captured an unforgettable moment of the 60's and the fight for equality for African American -- both in sports and in society. Tonight 50 years later (interestingly on "Juneteenth"), Dr. Carlos sought no applause or recognition but lauded today's athletes who protest the discrimination that still pervades our nation and challenged each of us to take a stand to carry on the fight for equality.
