American Oystercatcher

I’ve never seen this bird before and was curious to know what it was so I looked it up. It’s found along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts, Pacific coast of Mexico, the Baja Peninsula and along the Gulf of California. Prefers sandy beaches, mudflats, and occasionally rocky shores. Feeds on mussels and other bivalves. Most interesting fact i read was that the young can run within 24 hours of birth!

I’ve never seen or heard of this bird, that beak is amazing.

@kvphoto @kjarn Here is another interesting thing about the beak, “they insert the blade-like bills into mussels and other bivalves, severing the powerful adductor muscles before the shells can close”. So it must be pretty powerful!

Wow! Interesting info and a great photo. I've never heard of one of these before and I'm very impressed that it can open an oyster. Are you in one of the areas native to the bird or have you spotted it somewhere unusual?

@serendypyty I live in Long Island, NY on a canal. Yesterday I asked my husband to take me on a little ride on his small boat. I was in search of “wild” birds/ducks/geese for 30dayswild2020! I had never seen this bird before, so it was a good find. :)

@jb030958 It's great seeing flora and fauna from all different corners of the globe here on 365. I'd certainly never see a bird like that in the wild where I live. I'm in Kent, UK. 😀

We get these in the UK too, I always love to see them.

Look at that bill. It would need something like that to open an oyster.
