A volunteer's son works in Alaska and helps the villagers butcher whale for meat. He was allowed to bring home 100 pounds of meat and blubber for his help.
His mother said that people eat the blubber raw with crackers just like we might put out crackers and cheese for friends.
Let me tell you.. this sure doesn't taste good at all... definitely an acquired taste. Salty, fishy and rubbery. I couldn't swallow it ... the dark piece of meat behind the blubber is actual whale meat. That has to be cooked.
@365karly1 I do too.... but it's what they eat up there....and the villagers use everything last bit ... they don't waste like "us" Americans. And, honestly that whale roaming the oceans until hunted has a much better lives than the chicken we eat.
I don't think I could stomach it either. An interesting story. I am all for self sufficiency and using the game that is in the area for survival. How wonderful that all the whale is utilised. It is the slaughtering of whales for ' research' I don't get.
My boss goaded me into trying it ... we shared a slice.... she actually ate hers... I spit it out .... very fishy....
