Mechanical - day 2 by jeffjones

Mechanical - day 2

Yesterday's ride I had a front flat (*-note: Continental Gatorskin tires are miserable to change, they have such a tight bead....). Today I was starting a five mile climb and kept hearing an intermittent noise that I could not identify. At the top of the climb I stopped to check things more carefully - I was having hard shifts and even threw the chain off the gears into the spokes at one point. It ended up being the locking nut had come undone from the wheel. I limped back out (it was mostly a 5-mile descent so that was okay). When I got home I tried to fix things properly and discovered that the drive had sheared and now I have a useless wheel. Fortunately, I do have a spare from an old bike so I am not out of commission.
Glad it's not a total loss.

Always frustrating when things break.
