Caribou Harvest by jetr

Caribou Harvest

I tried to spare y'all the blood & guts, but our community pulled together, as they always do during this hungry subsistence time of the year. Seven caribou were brought in today and the kids' Culture lessons were all about skinning & cutting the meat. After that, my students were asked to help bag the meat to share amongst the villagers. It was a win-win day. :-)
So who does all this meat go to? Very interesting

@777margo Our village only has 250 total people. (The school has about 75 kids K-12) so at this time of year, they all pull together and share their fish and meat. Our school principal really promotes this type of community service and gets all the students involved.

Truly “life” lessons. So interesting to get this peek at life in that area of Alaska.

What a great way to show how a community is built! Working together and thinking of others is such an important lesson to learn at an early age. Beats book learning any day.

really interesting - I knew about some of this stuff from following someone from Alaska on another board, but not the images. (She's not on that board any more, but her stories were fascinating)

What a lovely community spirit.

Clearly well equipped for a meaningful community activity. Long may it continue with these young people so that they may pass the deed and its importance to future generations.
