Bad Hair Day by jgpittenger

Bad Hair Day

This is one of my favorites from about 4 hours of shooting. I'd never done manual focusing before but was forced to begin to learn because otherwise the only thing that would have been in focus was the branches. There must have been 40 birds roosting-flying in and out, making babies, making nests. Awesome sight. I can see its going to be a steep learning curve
Love the spray of soft feathers... nice contrast against the rough sticks of the nest! Great job! Beautiful composition!

Is it a stork? Its very lovely. Have you tried spot focussing with the autofocus? Great capture anyway.

oh I just noticed you tagged it an egret...

@fueast I tried the auto spot focusing but it kept focusing on the branches that were everywhere

@jgpittenger Probably a tricky situation so manual might be best - my camera alllows you to move the spot around which sometimes works. Anyway, you got it bang on.

Nice shot. How lovely to have such a beautiful subject! I have just recently used the manual focus. It does not always work for me but I can say I am impressed with some of the results. It takes a lot of practice.
