We were all cheering as they made their way to the ocean. I liked the lines in the sand. Best on black to see the detail on the sea turtles.
Thanks for your visits, comments, suggestions, favs
Looking at this picture makes me very emotional. Smiling and having wet eyes at the same time. Have a good long life, dear turtles. Thanks for sharing.
@mona65 I had emotional tears while I was watching. And they are SO tiny as compared to the huge surf they had to swim in to. I’ll post a shot of that tomorrow
What a sight - how good to be part of it. This is such a good story telling sequence which raises some questions for me. Do they incubate the eggs artificially and bring them back to the beach for release? Also, the turtle rookeries over here let their nests hatch naturally - but they always emerge at night and follow the moonlight to the sea. These little fellows seem happy enough to take off in daylight so obviously the moonlight isn't essential? They are the cutest little guys!
@robz apparently they are harvested from this same beach where predators would destroy them, incubated there in a green house like structure buried in nests in the sand and released at sunset while being watched over until they get into the surf
@jgpittenger That's such a good way to handle predators. Pigs do a lot of damage to the nests in Qld but the rangers have resorted to baiting for the pigs to reduce their numbers. It is working to a degree but i think this process would be more effective. It would also help with temperature control - apparently increasing temperatures are thought to maybe damage the incubating eggs. Thanks for the info - it's so interesting to see different ways of coping. :)
