Frost Patterns On the Hot Tub Cover

It went down to 28 degrees F here last night which is cold for here. I was stunned with the frost patterns on the cover of the hot tub. What would make them look like ferns? They were beautiful. I should have set up my tripod but was nervous re slipping on the icy deck with my still healing broken knee cap.
