A Swirl of Starlings

This is awesome, how many photos did you stack?

@haridas Thanks! I think there were about 40 frames, extracted from a video taken on my mobile. I hadn’t expected to see the birds: they’ve never done this before, as far as I’m aware, in trees just outside my garden. Quite a sight, and quite a sound.

@jlmather ah ok I didnt know it could be done with video stills, makes sense. I read people doing this using 600-700 photos but 40 is lot more comprehendable! Thank you for sharing

@haridas First time I’ve tried it. It would have been better with a camera on a tripod. There are some artefacts where some of the frames don’t overlap, which a bit of work in PS could sort out - bit of a rushed job, as ever with these 1-a-day things. On the whole, I’m very happy with the way it turned out.

Well done for catching them! The effect of the stacking is it gives the illusion of a mass of tangled barbed wire. I wonder if you could play with this image more and make it truly abstract and taking away the reference to the fact that they were starlings. From a contemporary perspective, it is all about the movement and flight path of these birds. You could have the beginning of a Contemporary Series here!

That’s pretty cool - they look like a particularly nasty bundle of barbed wire! Never tried that technique.

@marshwader Sorry to disappoint you, Maddy, but see the amazing work of Kathryn Cooper: https://kathryncooperwildlife.com/essays/nowhere.html

@jlmather Wow!! They are magical aren't they? But there is nothing to stop you doing your own version, and not necessarily just starlings!

@marshwader I refer the honourable lady to BCC newsletter issue 7 of the current season (Etc...).
