Forgive me for posting from Saturday long day yesterday. Left home before 6 and got home after 7 at night. Fell asleep in my car at lunch time. Then add hit and humidity and I have no picture taking enthusiasm. So I am posting a filler. My mentor said I should have taken a picture of the beautiful berries hanging on the plants. I accused him of never going berry picking. In New England the strawberries hide under the plants on the ground. Is it like that where you pick strawberries. Interested. Mentor I was just teasing.
Yes, they lay on the straw, you've got my juices going now, havent been for years but think I will make an effort this year. Although it is a lot of effort these days, don't know that my body is up to bending down for so long.
I haven't picked strawberries since I was a kid, but I'm going to have to go see if there's a farm around here now and see if it's still picking season so I can find out! Nothing like fresh strawberries, I've loved all your photos of the pick.
Well I see your problem Joan! The strawberry plants in Europe send out long runners and grow flat against the earth. To stop the berries rotting on the ground, it is usual to lift the runners and put straw underneath for the berries to lie on... ta da - straw-berries. Our strawberry patches are a riot of red and green, hence my suggestion... why do you colonials always have to be different?
I've never been berry picking, Joan - except mulberries on my aunty's tree when I was little. Yum! I must find somewhere and do this.
