Bird treat by joansmor

Bird treat

I have put out grape jelly for the birds in an oriole feeder for years and in the beginning oranges. The oranges only attracted ants. I have a new Oriole Feeder and it is far better than the old one. I have birds eating jelly and meal worm and ORANGES. See the evidence. And no ants so far. The little plastic cups pop our for easy cleaning and refilling. Worth every cent I paid for it.
How neat! I’ll have to look into that. I don’t Know if we can attract orioles here in town but they were so cool to watch at my friends’ house in Wisconsin (in the country). The birds we do get here eat almost better than we ourselves do, Frank feeds them so well.

You feed your birds completely different to us Joan, jelly...is that fir the hummingbirds? Ours just get peanuts, seeds, fat balls & if they are lucky mealworms.

@happypat Lots of birds like grape jelly I put out for my catbird but the feeder is an Oriole feeder. One cup holds grape jelly and the other meal worms, then I have a feeder for nuttyballs and a feeder I put seeds with the shells removed. But they aren't spoiled.

Sounds like an awesome feeder. We have Orioles up in the crowns of the trees and I'd love to entice them down to the yard. However with so many critters around I'm hesitant to put the oranges out!

You are lucky being able to feed the birds. The houses here back onto open farmland and feeding the birds encourages rats to come into the gardens from the fields. And from the gardens it is but a short distance to taking up residence in one's loft! They sounded like small dogs running above they made so much noise ...

So where are the Orioles?

That is a neat feeder for your fruit eating birds. Most of ours are seed eaters so not as many problems. :)

@jgpittenger I haven't been fast enough yet. They are skitterish

I was thinking of putting out bananas, to see what kind of birds might be attracted. All I have are seed eaters. @jgpittenger do we have any fruit eating birds in the PNW?

They sell cups called, among other things, ant traps. You hang your feeders from them and fill them with water. The ants can't get past the water.

@skipt07 Haven't had an ant problem yet but if I do I will get one of these.

@joansmor - From what I could make out of your feeder it looks similar to what we have. We also have a hummingbird feeder. We always have had problems with ants. Those cups keep them at bay. As long as you remember to keep water in them.

@skipt07 My hummingbird feeder has a well in the middle that works the same way.
