Begging Anniversary

I attended a "Red for Ed" rally yesterday. It is 1 year since our teachers went out on strike. The strike is over but there is still money needed. Our state is 2nd to the bottom with per/pupil funding and our teacher salaries are at 2008 levels even with the raises promised by our stingy legislature.

SOOCP- straight out of cell phone
not surprising that the teachers went on strike

@shannejw Maybe we should consider having a 'bake sale' for a fighter-bomber?

Wow, saw the similar signs today in Oregon.

@granagringa It amazes me that corporate greed has such power that the basics of society are neglected. Sorry, I will get down off of my soap box now.

You may be getting off your soap box, but I will get on mine! Louisiana is near the bottom on lots of lists like teacher salaries and high school graduation rates, and it drives me nuts. Poor education causes so many other problems, like poverty and wasted lives. Nice shot of the demonstration.

@eudora Totally AGREE!!! To educate our society is a long term and sustainable solution to so much. Oops, back up on the box....

Nice shot and frustrating story. My daughter is a teacher - right now taking a few years off to raise young ones. They are not paid well and they have to use a lot of their own money for supplies and things for the kids/classroom.

@jernst1779 It is nothing short of a crime to under-fund education. I know that there are many issues that make up the 'soup' but cutting funding for our children is short changing society. Hope your daughter isn't burned out and can make a transition back into teaching if that is what still calls her when her kids get older.

Great image - but the whole issue of teacher's wages is a disgrace.

Very compelling image with the story. I believe I live in the state at the very bottom of the barrel. West Virginia. Our teachers went on strike for 9 days. I wanted them to get what they needed. We cant afford to lose our teachers. I really don't understand why the government doesn't put more funding to our future generations and invest in them and the teachers. It's sad. Its scary.

@robz Spot on! If the legislators had children in public schools, maybe things would change.

@jenp Being at the bottom isn't a fun but we MUST keep fighting. My boys are in college but staying active for the future of this state's kids is so important to me.

@joysabin - I agree with you so much. The children are our future. We've got to make sure they are well educated, now, more than ever and the teachers need the resources to make that happen. I'm 47 years old and I hate to see how these kids are growing up now. I'm not the perfect mom, but my children have manners, we try to raise them right, instill morals and values... their friends come over and I'm shocked at how some of these kids act and behave. They are clueless and so are their parents. Maybe every generation thinks the next generation of kids are scary?!!!
