Rt 66 Preserved by joysabin

Rt 66 Preserved

On the east end of town is an old section Rt 66 which has been saved and set aside. Flagstaff grew up along Rt 66, changing, growing and adjusting to the trends as they happen.
I finally made the effort to discover this and visit it. There is various sections of what appears to be some original pavement as well as history and trivia about the "Mother Road". It was Lady Bird Johnson who 'helped' hasten the end of the Rt.66, she championed the highway beautification act which limited the number of signs which could be placed on highways. This prevented many small town merchants and businesses from advertising to road warriors what services were available in rural areas.
Really interesting and love your b&w take on it

@amyk Very grateful for the fav. To get to this one must be walking along busy rt. 66 or park and cross a busy road- maybe that is why it is in good condition, :):)

Awesome shot! I've read so much about Route 66 but have never seen it.

Amazing, looks like it is out of this Earth. Our landscapes are so visually littered.

Great shot (and processing) and a piece of history.
"Get your kicks on Route 66" and all that.

Interesting history

All very interesting, I've often wondered what happened to Route 66. Trust a politician (or the wife of one) to mess up something.

@eudora Truly grateful for the fav. Rt 66 is much more of a feeling now. There are actual portions left one may drive and some are a nice change of pace from the interstate. I like the section between Seligman and Kingman Arizona.

@haskar Most appreciative of the fav. This section doesn't allow cars just bikes and people. Cities like Flagstaff try to make the most of being associated with Rt 66 so, the part where cars are allowed is very cluttered with humanity and our trappings.

@gardencat Thank you, the IR really helped here. The song is fun but the 'kitch' of Rt66 isn't as grand as it used to be but it is fun to find and explore it.

@jernst1779 Thank you so much for the fav. The Rt66 lore is very vast.

@tstb13 Thank you so much. The Rt66 stuff is much more interesting than the road but now since it is slower and quieter than the fast interstate, I like it more.

@themusketeers Most grateful, thank you.

@bkbinthecity Thank you so kindly for the fav.

@jgpittenger I would like to some day explore the midwest sections of the Rt. They are just as interesting and not so 'wild west' themed.

@golftragic Thank you so much for the fav. I like to think that she had the best intentions but as with most 'good' ideas from Washington DC, they didn't think through the consequences. Its all of the people who make up a country not just the politicians and noisy rich people. Stepping down off my soap box now :):)

@jclaireyp Thank you very much.

@joysabin You could just as easily be referring to the same things in Australia! There's a relatively new term been coined for this phenomenon, 'the Canberra Bubble'. Canberra being our equivalent to Washington DC, as you probably know. These people all live in a bubble made from the soap in your soap box.
