A short cycle ride through the countryside took us to the remains of the village and stronghold of Pukará de Quitor. The Incas, being a pretty bloodthirsty lot, massacred the indigenous Atacama people and took it over. Then the Spaniards came along in 1540 and decapitated the defending Incas, displaying their heads on poles at the viewpoint.
This shelter just below the memorial gave very welcome shade from the midday sun.
