I remember a TV show when I was a kid called 'Hot L Baltimore'. I don't remember much about it, other that it was set in a kinda run-down hotel, with a sign in which the "E" bulb was burned out.
This worn out sign is attached to a building awaiting demolition, the former Hotel Churchill. It had a quirky exterior paint scheme that was supposed to look like a castle, although the building was not built like a castle, but just a regular-looking building.
I remember it was a functioning hotel when I moved to San Diego in 1985. I don't really remember when it fell on hard times. It has been boarded up for at least the last 10 years. And it has taken that long for the sign to get so weather-beaten.
