What’s patriotic about a watering can?

Nothing, really. But just because a holiday happens doesn’t mean you have to embrace the theme and engage every cliche of dressing up your kid! We didn’t deck Diego out in red, white and blue and stick sparklers in his ears to demonstrate his patriotic fervor. At one year old, he doesn’t have any, and given the political climate neither do either of his parents. The son of an immigrant - his mom became a U.S. citizen in 2010 - Diego represents the true meaning, for me, of this country every day of the year. He learns. He grows. And he embraces everyone with open arms. That’s what we believe our country is about. So in some ways a watering can is oddly representative of Yankee Doodle Dandy; it fosters growth and nurtures. That’s where our national pride should be stored. Not in stunting opportunity, not in preference and certainly never in the weeds of bigotry. We must bring about better times for all, especially our children. Like Diego, my “real American hero.”
