We ventured out of overcrowded Cambridge to Saffron Walden. It was much quieter and also most of the shops were shut which was a win win as far as Nigel was concerned. I did go a bit mad in the local bookshop though - it’s because it’s independent and, therefore, curated completely differently to the likes of Waterstones. I can’t remember exactly what I bought now as I kept swapping them! Anyway I have an excuse to go back on my way down south this week as I bought one for dad that he’s read already- and I bought myself a copy too (Ely Griffiths - she’s a family favourite!) so no point keeping it! We had an excellent flat white and toastie at Bicycletta- I was a bit grumpy at this point as the girl in the shades had bagsied a table before ordering and indeed didn’t order for ages as she was waiting for friends but all was well because somebody else moved. Ah one more week and we’re allowed in in....
Weather: v nice though there’s STILL a wind lowering the temperature.
Covid: still forcing us outside
Good thing: a couple of hours in the hammock!
Indeedy, one more week......I have not been in a coffee shop, even for takeaway, since last February! Methinks it may seem weird. I like the name of this shop.
Just the pleasure of ordering a coffee & cake is the thing we should never take for granted again. Good to know you can get your books changed...the advantage of an independent bookshop I expect.... a big chain might ask if you had read it before returning! Naughty girl...I would have felt really bad...tables are so precious just now, I feel I should be moving in as soon as I’ve finished drinking!
Glad you were able to get out and about. Things are moving a little faster toward 'before times' over here. Lots and lots of people out and doing, restaurants (inside at 75% capacity) and shops open, traffic returning to annoying. Most places are still requiring masks indoors, outdoors optional. I'm actually not dying to give up my mask indoors...I haven't had a sniffle, cough, sneeze, or any symptoms of any kind of yuck in 14+ months. ☺
@peggysirk I agree- I’ve just been watching Trevor McDonald doing a travel documentary. He was getting up close in some less than sanitary conditions and I was squirming about the lack of masks. There has been no flu here this year and if nothing else we’ll need to be cautious about that next winter.
