Hellebore Heaven by judithg

Hellebore Heaven

I found myself with neither dog nor photo in town this afternoon and nipped out of the side entrance of John Lewis to try to remedy the latter. I was pondering some pics of the university departments (as opposed to colleges) but, although there are some really interesting doorways the departments tend to be short of money and they could do with a scrub up, so I went next door into Pembroke College. When I was doing my PhD we used to sit on the lawns eating sandwiches at Pembroke (that's very liberal for a Cambridge College) and I cannot tell you how much I love it in there. It's a small college away from the river, hardly visited by tourists so it doesn't charge and the gardens are just fantastic. There are a couple of 'proper lawns' for croquet (and picnics) and a wild meadow with a pond which is crammed with different types of daffs. One corner has a plethora of different magnolia blooms out and there are beautiful old walls draped with flowering plants even at this early stage. Note to self: leave dog at home and go in more often.
These double hellebores were in a lovely border with a gorgeous pink camellia climbing the wall behind and were in two colours, the white one in the foreground and a black one you can just make out behind.

Beautiful! We would never think of sitting on the lawns/garden areas at my alma mater -- fire ants make it too dangerous, lol. A beautiful description. Would love to see more images from there.

@oblateal Thanks Al - there will be more - I can't decide whether to go with more of today's or wait for a good blue sky.

cool bokeh and lovely photo altogether. I, on the other hand, opened my curtains to a new batch of snow this morning, so yes, am officially jealous of the English spring with its myriad of flowers and green grass and daffodils and all that... sigh
