I fully expected to plug in my memory stick and find no pictures at all of any use today. It's a dull, dreary day and very photo-unfriendly. I tried taking the park-keepers blowing the leaves around on Jesus Green (or 'J Green' as Adam has started calling it - sort of gangsta park) but the light at 2pm was so low as to be useless. I've never really understood the point of a leaf blower - it looked like it would be much easier to suck the things up than blow them around. So I wandered through the edge of town photographing random things in an increasingly eccentric fashion until I was attracted by the basket of flowers on the railings of this house. I think the cottages must belong to one of the colleges but they look a bit run down - somebody is really making an effort to be cheerful with this one though. It's opposite the multi-story carpark and I've never really paid it any attention before. Should I have cropped out the window and bike do you think? Thanks for all your lovely comments about the fireworks shots even though my favourite only got 1.5 votes! I could do with some flash bangs to brighten up this miserable evening - nearly dark at 4.15 :0(
if you crop the window , you cut the bike , if you cut out the bike you lose some of teh railings and the whole context starts to get lost , including the sense of depth.
That's just me , holding a piece of paper against the side of the screen , try and see what you think.
This red door is just the ticket to brighten up an otherwise dreary day. I agree about the weather in Cambridge today - I wasn't inspired either. I found a lovely tree though on Christ's Pieces and warmed it up with a little editing.
Crop out the bike - heavens, no!!! I can't decide which I am drawn to more, the red door or the bike. Either one is good, but both together is great. Well done.
Lovely red door & the character of the place shouts at you !!! I think if you took your bicycle out it would spoil the picture ...that & the window balance the photo up !!
@judithg ahh judith but that's because it's a right angle triangle :)...Pythagoras and all that ..... but there is detail and texture in the brickwork so the gap is fine :)
I too love your compositin as it is. I looked into the window where it looked so warm and cosy after your description of the day and I always love a red door!
I love it too, I would remove the window, but love the bike which HAS to stay, the texture on the brick is amazing and the red door so works. We are always been told in the club, that a shot with some red in it always wins over a shot with none!!!
The bike makes it better! So I am glad you left it in. Seems like you have to keep the window if you keep the bike...but I think they are both good there. Love the processing! and I never got leaf blowing either...half the time, here in the city, they are just blowing it from their parking lot into someone else's. Chik Fil a has people blow them off their gorgeous grass and into the street and on the cars driving by. I took a photo of them but never used it.
i just love the composition of this shot! you have such a great eye!!
don't you hate the short days:/ but.......before we know it they will be on their way the other direction:)
Love the texture of the bricks against the red door. The crop works really well for me - I like the bike in there and the plants. . Reminds the viewer this is a "home"

There's a nice triangle of bike, steps, door, window...apparently triangles work in compositions .....:)
