When my beloved neighbour Hazel died her daughter in law gave me quite a few of her sewing supplies. I gave away quite a lot of vintage fabrics to a friend who makes a lot of stage costumes but I really wish I'd kept them. I'm sewing a pink dress for my friend's daughter for Christmas (just seen in the background) -she has been dressed more or less in blue since birth but she told me 'I like pink' with a look that said don't bother turning up with any other colour. I could have used one of these threads from Hazel's extensive pink collection but I don't like to use them so I bought one for the machine - I'll use these for hand-finishing. I noticed when i got the bobbins out that these pinks have proper names. From right to left: Mid orchid, Light Rose du Barri, Geranium, Light Pimpernel, Fiesta Pink, Frivolous pink.
Three good things:
1. Nigel is walking the dog :0)
2. The sun has broken through so he may not be completely frozen when he gets home.
3. Out tonight - three Saturday's in a row - that's actually a proper social life!!
I love the names of the colours, and the old wooden bobbins. Good luck with the dress, your sewing must be coming on a treat. Thanks for the info about the NY exhibition - it looks much more artistically displayed. I was disappointed with the displays at the V&A as they had used artefacts photographed on to cardboard cutouts - and the bald models didn't help either. Maybe this is the way they do it now.
oooh that is lovely! And somehow the plastic varieties are not the same at all. And you can't do French Knitting with the reels when they are finished!!!
Ah nice. Reminds me of my gran. I see what you mean about the colours. The first two are much more subtle. Good news about your social life. I'm out tonight too. Dancing! Get me. Might have to stay up late and everything.
Lovely dof on this, makes a beautiful picture of something quite simple. Love all the colours and their names. You be careful with all that going out, you'll be dubbed 'a party girl'
@judithg yes...I saw that. I see it both ways on books I think....so thought maybe it referred to her. She was a force to be reckoned with from what I have read about her...how Marie Antoinette did not approve of her s she ignored her. Court advisors to,d her she needed to at least recognize her to some degree...so ater that, when DuBarry entered a crowded room, Antoinette just turned her head a bit and made eye contact ( or so goes the story) and that was enough to made things okay ...she did not even speak...I could not have lived in that world with all its rules and protocols
I love this shot, I adore sewing accessories. Anyone interested might like to check out Sadou on-line French sewing supplies, delightfully vintage and so beautifully presented!
Light Rose du Barri is a very stylish name & they are all such pretty colours ....a rather special memento of your lovely neighbour. I think it is rather nice to be remembered by these beautifully blending colours she sounds like a gentle easy old fashioned lady. You will put them to good use I'm sure but won't want to use them all up!!! lovely DoF too of course.
Have a great night out!!!!
lovely composition of these old reels.
The old cotton cotton as opposed to the synthetic 'cotton' did have a subtlety. I admire your handiwork , I dont do any now i'm afriad
I will have to check my threads to see if they are named other than their numbers! When one of my friends gave up sewing, she gave me yards of Waverly fabric - enough for me to completely slipcover my four section couch...eight cushions, zippered and welted. The couch is long gone, but I am still using the dozens of spools of thread.
Fabulous image! Love the colors and the names. I always wonder who is responsible for naming colors for things like thread and paint. Is that a separate paid position in the process of production, I'd like to know. You must be an accomplished seamstress, Judith...would love to see the finished pink dress.
ahhh judith a robin shot followed by a bobbin shot ....I remember last year you seemed to slip in the occasional 'accidental song titles' in your image titles ....i think you are far too clever now ...Robin followed by Bobbin gives us .........
"When the Red, Red Robin (Comes Bob, Bob, Bobbin' Along :) :)
