River life

Does the water dominate too much? I took Monty to Jesus Green via Jesus Lock today because I thought there might be some daffs out along the river bank - and there were but I needed two free hands for a sharp shot while squatting down (falling over backwards here involves falling in the river!) But I love this barge so it stepped once more into the breach. The owners have two very young children - it must be hard work getting them on and off all the time but they get a lovely view and it's constantly changing with birds coming and going, punts and canoes and other river life.
Three good things:
1. The buds are bursting on the willow trees
2. Daffs are coming out
3. The frogs are returning
JH
TWO children? That makes me feel better about our one!

I like the gull. By the looks of his post he stands there quite a lot...

Lovely composition. You even have a seagull on the post. Love the way you have captured the movement in the water.

Judith this is a brilliant image with the 'frozen' water really enhancing the shot. Fabulous composition.A fav!

I love it! what filters did you use for this?
March 6th, 2013
I really love this, it does feel a bit dangerous, especially the story of children on board. Fabulous picture!

4. And all's right with the world! Great image, love it. The smoke promises cosines inside.

Cosiness, not cosines!!!

I really like the rushing water and your POV. I might have gone for the wider landscape view but I think this works.

This is fine as it is. My eyes are drawn to the boats and all that's happening in top third of photo.
March 6th, 2013
@jewelsandbinoculars Quite a few have two - you've no excuse! It's the getting the toddler to wait on the bank/in the boat while you get the baby out bit that must be tricky.

Terrific photo! I don't think the water dominates; while it's quite a focal point, the green float and the gorgeous boats draped in yellow willow compete quite well! I think the vertical format aids my eye in moving through all that.

Wow you can almost hear the rushing water, its a very interesting view of the lock its a fav
March 6th, 2013
@traeumerlein No filters - I used a touch of 'curves' to tweak the exposure.
March 6th, 2013
I like this... so much happening in there.
March 6th, 2013
What a capture, so much going on your eye just goes all over. gorgeous.
March 6th, 2013
Great shot with lots going on. I particularly like the budding weeping willow overhanging the water.
March 6th, 2013
Wow thats some busy shot ........really amazing.......love the frozen (almost) water, the gull the barge the weeping willow oh sod it everything.....has to be a fav then!!
March 6th, 2013
Great pov, love the flowing water.
March 6th, 2013
@judithg cool! I thought you had used a filter for long exposure during daylight
March 6th, 2013
I wonder if life on a barge is peaceful and relaxing? Love your composition and your capture of the water.

Lovely shot Judith. I don't think the water dominates too much I think it is a great feature. Love the smooth texture you have got the exposure just right.

This is stunning Judith, a fave for sure. does Monty go swimming?

Jo
What a fabulous shot, you positioned yourself perfectly and the water looks amazing.
March 6th, 2013
Love the silky looking water! Lots of interest in the background, too!
March 6th, 2013
Clever water shot Judith, gives the whole picture a different dimension...I just love the bits of stick poking out of the weir. The house boat is a real attractive looking home ......very cosy but must be a real challenge with small children!
March 6th, 2013
Great pov

Does the water dominate too much? Hmmmmm ...it takes half the frame ......a judge in a camera club competition would say 'yes'....Phil says (not that i'm a judge) ...it is probably two shots in one frame ...the water and the barge ....I do like it though as photography rules are meant challenged

I would love to see more of the barges and the tree but I think the water is what makes it a much more unusual short. Like the pov.
March 6th, 2013
It's a very attractive shot - full of interest. I admit that I would have chopped the lower fall of water off. But it made me stop to comment :-)

Really interesting image,it keeps me looking and looking at it!
March 7th, 2013
This is wonderful. I've never seen anything like it. It is a complicated photo so I imagine the family lives in the front end? Wonderfully intriguing!
March 7th, 2013
Great POV & photo.
March 7th, 2013
instant fav

I love the way you've captured the movement of the water over the weir. For me it looks like 2 images, I love the barge and the big green thing in the top half but the BGT gets in the way for me in a single image ....ramble, ramble ....
March 7th, 2013
It must be amazing to live on a boat with children. Would probably be too cramped for me but at least the children always have something to watch (Little J. loves to look at cars through the window or now that it's warmer at twigs in the breeze). Love the slow-mo effect of the water and the composition is spot-on!
March 7th, 2013
The water makes a tranquil shot so very dramatic! Lots to look at here. Glad you didn't risk falling in!
March 7th, 2013
oh thats a fav
March 7th, 2013
@phil_howcroft I was worrying about your photography club when I posted it - I knew the proportions were out! Great news on the interviews - I'm sure you'll knock em dead.
March 7th, 2013
I like the POV and the composition. I think it is interesting with so much water. The water dominating makes me be able to imagine the roaring sound it must make.
March 7th, 2013
I like the water but wonder how it would look with more up above?
March 8th, 2013
I don't think it dominates at all. It provides a context for the shot xx
March 8th, 2013
I knwo where this is! great POV - and nice composition
March 9th, 2013
I rather like all the water, and the steam, and the refecltions, and the colors . . . I like it all!
