I love the saw shaped antennae on this little beastie. Some people confuse this beetle with the Scarlet Lily Beetle which is illustrated on my 16 April photo http://365project.org/julienne1/365/2015-04-16 . However, this Cardinal beetle has a red head rather than the black head of the Lily Beetle, it has a smooth back unlike the dimpled back of the Lily Beetle, and it's carnivorous while the Lily Beetle only eats lily or fritillaria leaves.
@copperband - it wasn't one of these fellows, it was the dreaded scarlet lily beetle! This one is innocent of lily devastation because he only eats insects!
@novab - it's good to get up close with the help of my camera. You can see much better what they are really like
@shirleybankfarm - it's the only one I've seen this year so far. They are classed as "common" but I can't say I see many!

@gijsje - I don't pretend to know that much about beetles either, but I do enjoy the rich variety that you can see in the countryside
