I've no idea what caused this strange pattern of rotting wood! It almost looks like something that has perished away under fast flowing water or something but it is in the middle of a wood on top of a hill so it can't be that. All that I can think is that the tree had some sort of disease that meant the wood rotted in this unusual way over a log period of time. All those hanging bits are firm to the touch although they look like hanging weeds or something!
