Emerging from the forest floor

Arum maculatum making an early appearance this year under the trees. The Latin name comes from the Greek word ‘aron’ meaning poisonous plant and and maculatum meaning speckled. This plant also has so many common names ... Lords and Ladies, Cuckoopint, Wild Arum, Adam and Eve, Jack-in-the-pulpit, Devils and Angels, Cows and Bulls, Adder's Root, Friar's Cowl ... to name but a few, but my favourite is "Wake-robin bod gabhair"
