Large Pied Hoverfly (Volucella pellucens)

This is one of the UK's largest flies. You might at first sight think it's a bee but, like all hoverflies, it only has two wings unlike bees and wasps which have four. It lives on nectar and pollen and it was enjoying the wild privet in the woods today.
