This was taken at Monkey World in Dorset which is a rescue centre set up to save and rehabilitate primates from around the world who are victims of illegal pet trade, inappropriate tourism/photographic props, circus performers, laboratory research etc. Most of the chimpanzees are rescued after being smuggled out of Africa when very young to be sold illegally abroad. Sadly this often results in the deaths of many other chimpanzees who try to protect these young apes from being taken by the smugglers. Once the babies reach 4 or 5 they become uncontrollable and even dangerous, so whether they are pets or tourist props they are usually end up neglected, abused or even killed. Fortunately, for those rescued by Monkey World, they are rehabilitated and integrated into stable social groups in large, interesting enclosures where they can live out happy lives.
I keep being drawn back to your picture on PP. This guy is really looking at you with deep thoughts. Monkey world is such an amazing place doing such great work against the odds. fav!
@Cherrill - I think what is so mesmerizing is that they are so like we humans! That face is so full of character and you can't help but wonder what is passing through his mind.
@annied - it's heartbreaking the awful things some humans do to animals.... but heartwarming that so much time, care and love is lavished on the ones that are lucky enough to be rescued
