Buff Ermine caterpillar - Spilosoma luteum

I seem to be seeing lots of caterpillars moving very hurriedly and purposefully at the moment - presumably looking for suitable spots to pupate for the winter!
Great close up of this one.

Looks short, fat and hairy. Great macro Julienne.

A lovely close up. I have seen the grand total of one caterpillar this year, when I was young there seemed to be hundreds of them. Of course I would always take one home and place it, along with a few leaves in a jam jar. My poor mum must have got tired of tipping them out once I was in bed!

@suzanne234 I used to collect them as a child too - I was lucky enough to have aquired an old meat cabinet which was actually quite good for keeping them in for a while because of the mesh sides. I don't think I ever had any luck with seeing them through pupating though!
