King Alfred's Cakes by julienne1

King Alfred's Cakes

In the woods there are lots of these strange little fungi growing on rotting trees. They are so named after the legend of King Alfred who, being hunted by the Danes, was taken in and being sheltered by a peasant woman who asked him to keep an eye on the cakes she was baking. He forgot to check on them and they burned - and legend says he then scattered them through the woods to conceal his mistake!
Wow... interesting. I've never seen anything like that before!

These 'cakes' don't look very appetising...
