Glow-worm

This is a female glow-worm beetle attached to a rock on the verge of lane near my house. She has no wings so at night she just sits and waits, glowing with a green light from her abdomen, hoping to attract a male (which has wings) as he flies past in search of a mate. The males have large photosensitive eyes designed to pick up the light emitted from a female. It's a precarious business as they are so rare nowadays and the adults only live for 2-3 weeks and are unable to feed. I've only seen one other glowing female this year so I hope this one finds a mate soon so she can lay eggs to swell the local population. It's such a treat to see these tiny green lights in the hedgerows at night.
