Black Alder by julienne1

Black Alder

The Black Alder, like the Willow, is a water-loving tree and grows alongside the rhynes on the Somerset Levels. The leaves are just starting to open and the female cones still visible. Timber from the alder is oily and water resistant so was often used for underwater foundations...parts of Venice and many medieval cathedrals were built on Alder pilings.

Interesting tree. The leaves are pretty. The female cones look like pine cones. Thanks for the history! I did not know that about the Black Alder.
