Last day of our little break was spent on a Tram City tour of Christchurch.. Have not spent much more than a pass through in Christchurch since the February 2011 6.3 earthquake when 185 people lost their lives.. It is heartening to see that the City is picking it's self up and building are getting repaired or rebuilt..
But it was very sad sight to see the beautiful Anglican Cathedral that had centre stage of the City being severely damaged. There has been major discussion as to weather to demolish or repair/rebuild.. The powers that be have decided on repair/rebuild but as it is estimated to cost $93.8 million it is taking a while to get the project up and running..
Lets hope progress will start soon...
Where the hell do they get 93 million! I presume its million - would hardly be $93! They leave the grass growing wild here otherwise it might just look like one of the ruins in Europe! And just leave it!
Yes corrected now Maggie .. Million!!!.. It is all the fences and unkept grass etc that makes it look worse .. I guess they can't just leave it for safety reasons .. I think it should be demolished and use as much of the materials to do a rebuild..
What a beautiful church with its lovely patterned roof tiles - so sad to find it in this state of disrepair after the earthquake I hope the power that be chose wisely in its future !
Oh wow, this is a whole different view from the one in the papers. What a tragedy this wonderful old building was so badly damaged. Are they re-building?
@maggiemae Even though I was born and lived in Christchurch for many years, I agree it would be better to demolish it- and spend that money on something that actually benefits those that are still living in ruined houses after all these years. Oops - I am getting political. Very controversial topic. Great POV though.
That repair bill is mind blowing and I guess the longer they leave it the more the cost goes up. One has to wonder if it would be better to just salvage parts of it to incorporate into a new building.
