On a recent Turkish Airlines flight, the movie shown on the main screen (in other words, it was the ONLY movie you could watch) was a documentary on the concept of "space." Seriously. I usually refer to "light fluff movies" as "airplane movies" because they can be seen out of the corner of one eye while multi-tasking on the plane and you don't miss much. Well, this documentary redefines "airplane movie" since it commanded your entire attention and that you be intellectually engaged to make sense of it. I tried, but in the end, I fell asleep, brain overtaxed. What I did understand is that I want to consider how to create an illusion of space by representing it through photography on a flat plane. I found this spinning wheel in the Turkish History Tangible Objects Exhibit and photographed it from various angles, playing with what portion to capture and what to cut off in order to create an illusion of it extending beyond the frame but still showing how much space it occupies. I wonder how I could have included something that would have shown the scale of the object?
Fantastic shot!! Don't know how you'd show scale without somehow interfering with the overall effect which is great (maybe a finger on the string at the right? Welcome back online!
Wow - this shot is fabulous! I wish I'd had an airplane movie that interesting - ever! I'm not sure how you could have shown the scale without ruining the beauty of this shot, but now I'm wondering about the scale...
Wow -- I'm so surprised at how much people love this photo! Thank you all for your very supportive comments! I guess it's a good thing that I watched the airplane movie and applied it to my photography after all!
