Who's looking at you?

This piece of art in the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin was created by Thomas Bayrle in 1966. It said on the plaque beside it, "Öl auf Holz, Elektromotor." I could understand that it meant oil painting with electric motor but ??? The guard saw my curiosity and pushed a small button on the side and the painting changed from Chairman Mao's face to a red star on a white background! In this photo, you can see the closeup of the eye which shows the man tiny people, and you can begin to see how the red behind is starting to rise and show up.
different effect

This is very eerie looking the way you've captured it. So, what was the material that it was made from that allowed it to change? I doesn't look digital but I'm guessing it must be somehow. ???
