One of the outcomes of this stay-at-home time has been the development of my interest in birding. In the past, my husband and I would hire a birding guide when we'd travel on vacation, but otherwise my interest in birds was to serve my pursuit of photography. Through this time at home, I decided to develop my backyard into a safe haven for myself and to provide me with photography subjects. So, I purchased a bird feeder and waited -- no birds. So I got advice from 365 birding people about the type of feeder, type of food, habits of birds, etc. and soon I realized there was so much to learn and how interesting it all was. 11 bird feeders and 5 bird houses later (my neighbors when selling their house gave me most of them), I know that you need a wide range of feeders and food to attract different birds. Sitting outside for hours I have seen patterns of different bird behaviors and it helps me with photography. I know this is obvious to many of you. But perhaps I can share a fun fact with you: The most popular "bird feeder" in my backyard is the red plastic lid to Costco peanut butter. So, thank you for inspiration, advice, and positive feedback! MerlinID App is my necessary informant for what I am photographing. @inthecloud5@berelaxed@cjwhite@markp@backyardbirdnerd@fayefaye I've used the tag jy-backyard-bird for each that I have captured so far this spring. I've missed the scarlet tanager as it was only migrating, and I'm working on getting a good photo of the indigo bunting, blue jay, and woodpeckers. I've even heard the Great Horned Owl but never seen him. My neighbors tell me they have seen a peregrine falcon (perhaps one of the ones that live on our public library?)
@taffy -- since you have been at my backyard, I have acquired 5 birdhouses and five feeders and 3 poles from my neighbors. The houses have twigs from prior times and I already saw a bird going into one to check it out in its new location. As for the title, this photo was more fun than the one of it just sitting there looking nice. Besides, I learned all about animal/bird quips from you and Kathy!
And I love your title!
