"A manatee calf may stay with its mother for one to two years, even though it is probably nutritionally independent by the end of its first year. The calf gets information on feeding and resting areas, travel routes and warm water refuges from its mother." (for more info see: https://savethemanatee.org/manatees/manatee-facts/ ) We had a nice paddle on the Weeki Wachee River today. This manatee cow and calf were also traveling downriver so we were able to float along them for a bit. The current took us along faster than the manatee. There are many natural springs along this river like this one indicated by the teal colored water. At one point a snake came swimming across the water and I had to paddle quickly so it wouldn't swim into my kayak!
