huhu beetle detail

Bizarre, i was lying on my bed wondering what i could photograph for my get -pushed challenge from Sally ,( texture and pattern in black and white ) and suddenly a huge beetle appeared, it must have hitched a ride on my camera bag when i was out in the bush this morning!

I would never have guessed this was a huhu beetle. And of course I am not keen on getting to close to them except when I have to pick them up by their feelers and toss them back outside where they belong. We call them 'haircutters' as if they get in your hair you have to cut them out! Great close up. Fav.

I recall Huhu grubs were pretty immense and edible if you like that kind of thing.Great pic, when I run out of moths (never) I would hunt beetles.

@dkay haha photographing them is one way of overcoming some of the loathing, they are incredible feats of natures engineering, just look at those wing cases!

@steveandkerry moths are pretty unheralded, maybe because of their night habits and dowdy appearance, until you take a closer look. there are lots of varieties in newzealand but my mind generally just says moth and looks no further,

Not coming back as one of these, they don't eat!!!!
Amazing macro of a 5cm long bug. how close did your lens get to it Kali??
December 21st, 2016
@salza i didn't! haha i took it outside once it got too active. i have handled a dead one though
December 21st, 2016
Pretty awesome, but I'm glad we don't have them in Denmark :-)

@30pics4jackiesdiamond the lens touched it several times, i tried with extension tubes but my sx50 fixed lens on macro setting did a better job, this is cropped though.

Awesome shot of it

Wonderful macro. Reminds me a little of peanut shells; I think it's the shape rather than the colour. Very graphic and views very well on black.

There is no such thing as accident.

At first glance I thought this was tread from some oddly designed tire- once again nature humbled me with her artistic outflow, nice.
