As some of you may be aware, I'm addicted to photographing cupolas and rooftops. And fire escapes. And historic buildings. Okay, I'm addicted to photographing many different subjects. Today's photo, though, is the beautiful cupola and chimney atop the Goff Memorial Hall - home of the Blanding Library - in Rehoboth. This building was built in 1915 after the original 1886 wooden structure was struck by lightening and burnt to the ground. In addition to the library, this building also housed a small school for the first year of its existence. The facility is currently operated by the Rehoboth Antiquarian Society.
This shot was taken with the 70-200 f2.8L IS, handheld, at 70mm. The exposure was metered on the sky with a 2-stop over-exposure compensation. In post processing, I applied a bold HDR filter in Topaz Adjust, which really brought out the detail in the sky and the interesting color range of the cupola. I applied slight sharpening using a high pass filter in soft light blend mode and a 4 pixel radius. A dark blue filter was applied to just the sky. A slight saturation adjustment and a levels adjustment completed the image.
