Trillium by kathiecb

Trillium

It was Victoria Day today and a national holiday. It was a perfect day weather wise and we were out and about driving the back roads.
Spring produces the perennial wildflower the Trillium. It's the official flower of Ontario and can be found in woodland settings.
As a kid I was always told that it was illegal to pick Trilliums. Although that's not true picking parts of the flower can kill it.
Some interesting facts:
It takes 7 years to grow from a seed to a flowering plant.
Ants and hornets transplant the seeds to new areas in the woods as they're attracted to the arils (don't ask)
White Trilliums are the most common with a few pinky ones mixed in. On our hunt today we saw for the first time red Trilliums. I'll post a pic on my alternate album. http://365project.org/kathiecb/2nd-fiddle/2014-05-19
Beautiful...always loved the trillium....I think it was said it is illegal to pick because of the long growing time and if you pick the flowers, they don't get the chance to regenerate. I would still rather see them NOT picked! Love the White ones and the Red ones, we called them Wake Robins.

@lynnb It was a perfect weekend to see them in full bloom. Imagine how long it takes for the large patches to reach maturity. Amazing.

@nanm Thanks Nancy. I'm not sure how wide spread they are but I know they're in Michigan, Minnesota and New York...okay I researched that, too. Haha
