John 3:16
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
This bible was given to my husband’s great-great-great grandfather, Rev. William Hurt, in 1827 by his parishioners. He was a Wesleyan (Methodist) minister in Derbyshire, England. On his death in 1877, the bible was passed to his oldest son Wesley, himself a Wesleyan minister. Wesley took the bible to South Africa in 1880. Since then it has passed to the oldest son of the oldest son. My husband inherited it on the death of his father in 1986 and in 2009 it came with us to New Zealand. It records on the fly-leaves, in beautiful hand-writing, all the family births, marriages and deaths since William’s marriage in 1829.
The crucifix belonged to my paternal grandmother. I’m not sure how old it is – my father, who is 82, remembers it being in their house in Mauritius when he was a child, and he kindly gave it to me when his mother passed away in 1982.
(To give an idea of size, they are about 40 cms in length)
