Def BoB if you have a moment. I took a while to get a result I was happy with on this image. I had never realised how many choices there are when converting to BW until this month. Thank you for the awesome comments - I'm still not convinced the colour version is not better for most of these, but it's an interesting challenge for myself.
A lovely capture great variety of textures - I am not a fan of b/w but it is an exercise to strengthens ones Ideas about an image ,light shades etc , an exercise we employed in Art Classes ! !
Did you edit out some of the branches? I like the texture on the branches and the fur on the koala but i’m a bit conflicted about the stark white sky.....but that is probably just me.
@jacqbb thanks for commenting in some detail! it was interesting as I was adjusting each of the colours I felt the actual koala stood out better and gave the image a really different feeling to the original. I didn't however edit out any branches at all :)
@jenp koalas are not aggressive to other animals, nor to humans. They are loners, and the males certainly fight as do males of many species to determine position within their colony. The mating ritual is rather frightening for many as it is rather similar to felines both in behaviour and biology.
But for the most part they are considered to be rather gentle, unassuming animals. Certainly with those teeth and claws it is never recommended to attempt to pick one up as they will respond the way we would expect a wild animal to respond when frightened (and their ribs are incredibly fragile and break if you attempt to pick one up like a dog or cat).
They sleep around 18-22 hours a day, so most koalas you see awake still look sleepy :) Thanks for asking, great to chat with you here!
@cruiser if you found one on the side of the road injured you might (just might, you might not if you are smart) be tempted if it was being very quiet ... now you know better ;)
IMHO I think that mono suits this shot. Why? Whilst colour takes and forces the eye to view more, this doesn’t necessarily render a 'better' result. I use 'better' with reserve, yet think and feel that mono is calming and makes me look at a shot more and consider what it's trying to tell me and/or show me. The acid test of me perhaps is...what is it like in colour? Yet...every day has different aspects which influence what we think/say/do/feel. Can't necessarily get them all in sync on the same day! Need more photos;-)
Do these lovely animals have some reflex that locks their muscles around the limbs? Or non-skid pads on their undersides? If I held one position very long in exercise class my muscles would just totally give out.
@kchuk she really has herself all over that branch doesn't she? I reckon she is staying pretty cool as you suspect. We have had milder summer temperatures here compared to the past 2 years. Down south is where the heat wave has been hitting - the worst ever recorded.
But we are in a shocking drought, so the dry is doing a lot of damage to everything from farms to wildlife :(
@s4sayer thank you so much - you are quite right that in mono one does seem to sit back and really look at the image in more detail and find what it is about. I'm enjoying learning through this month :)
@shutterbug49 indeed the seem to be able to get into a position, lock in and then totally relax into it. I would be the same, I would either just suddenly lose grip and fall or everything would seize up painfully lololol they do it so effortlessly...
