I stopped the bike when I saw Newman (in the previous 2 days photos) and got off and took photos of him. Got back on the bike and continued my daily spotting.
I happened to come back along a track approaching the tree again and was stunned to find Dodge had been hanging out on a limb here the whole time and I had stood right under him to photograph Newman - and had not seen him!
Proving yet again, that my amazing koala counts are always the minimum koalas on the property, but never the full sum of who is really there. Who knows how many I miss that are in plain sight, let alone when they are hiding!
I love his nose pattern!
Thank you for the awesome questions and comments on my photos - ask away!
I do this with galahs in the trees. You would think a galah would be easy to see but no. I think I've seen them all and then they take off and I'm always amazed at the number that were there right above my head.
So cute ! he seems to muse " Ha ha ! you didn't find me !! How do you keep track not only of nose patterns but also the names -- I am completely befuddled !!
@beryl I keep a file with a clear photo of each koala's nose, and the file is named with the koala name. I constantly trawl through this whenever I am not sure of a nose I see :)
@gardencat he sure does have an ear tag. He was hit by a car about 1 km down the road from here in early June. We released him here on July 1 and he has been seen on the property about half the days of July :)
Well he must like it there. Hope he stays safe. I wouldn’t have thought Koalas would be down on the road much since they seem to spend most of their time up in trees ...but then I realize I know very little about them actual, mostly what I’ve seen on the odd nature show, your posts and a brief glimpse of some at the Taronga Zoo several years ago.
@gardencat they certainly should not be on the ground and on the roads but their habitat is so quickly dwindling due to humans, they are being hit by cars at an alarming rate. In just this area in the past year we picked up over 60 koalas that died from car hits :(
@samae@pyrrhula I'm pretty sure he was more concerned about just being very still and quiet because Newman had him bailed up there than worrying too much about me :)
It's interesting to read the questions and answers, too, along with the comments on your koalas. You give us such a wonderful nature lesson with your shots and commentary.
