Newman is showing off the thumbs on his feet for you. Since we mentioned thumbs recently I thought it was nice of him to give a little wave.
The second and third toes are fused together but with 2 claws it creates a comb effect that they use to try and remove ticks. I often see ticks on koalas so I guess it doesn't always work as well as it could. They do groom a lot with the fused toes. People often think they are scratching but a lot of the time they are simply grooming.
All of this is such interesting information and they pose so nicely so you can point it out. The sky still looks smoky but glad you are all safe. Will the rescued koalas that are losing their homes be brought to a sanctuary like yours?
@shutterbug49 yes there is still smoke around :(
moving koalas is incredibly difficult and this is going to be a huge thing for survivors that have lost their habitat. sadly there have been pretty much no surviving koalas in this area from actual fire areas :(
I see the problem. Saving them from the fires is good but where will they live after the fires have destroyed their areas. I'm assuming each area can only support so many of them and attempting to move the ones from the fire ares into the remaining areas will only make life difficult for the koalas in those areas. No easy solutions anywhere.
(Thanks for you so nice comment. It makes my day.)
