seen from the distance I was at to take this, the tawny literally looked like part of the broken end of this branch. I'm not sure what alerted my brain that my eye had seen something
You must have been wide awake to spot this -- a stunning find :)

Super find. I remember seeing one by the river many summers ago. We stood and looked at him, he sat & occasionally opened an eye then went back to sleep for what seemed hours.
Our eyes are so clever in the way they spot anomalies, yours were working REALLY well.

@paul10 @lanikyea not night hawk, this is an Australian native bird - Tawny Frogmouth. It is often mistaken for an owl, but it is not :)

Wonderful capture. I had two tawny owls once in a tree and they are so unique. Feathers are so rich too.

@fr1da they are beautiful, but this is a tawny frogmouth, not an owl. They are just exquisite :)
