This is a coast carpet python, one of my favourite native snakes that I get to see.
Hard to say the size of this one, but a couple of metres I'd guess - high up in a tree as they tend to be as they are arboreal. Beautiful patterns aren't they?
Thanks for the many lovely comments on my photos, so glad to have you along.
@paul10 oh not stupid at all! technically a coast carpet python could take a koala, at least a young one. they will take cats and possums, and I've seen photos of one swallowing a small wallaby. Koalas are not on their regular diet list - but if things were really tough I guess they would have a go.
Mostly they prefer to eat smaller mammals and birds, they are fantastic ratters. I have one that lives in the ceiling of my garage and I'm more than happy with this rat/mouse arrangement :)
@jacqbb I've seen some amazing photos of them eating all kinds of unexpected things including cats and dogs when they are in urban situations. They will eat chickens as they do like birds. But mostly they go for smaller mammals.
Koalas are not considered the usual diet for them. Koalas actually have no true predators. An eagle could technically also take a small koala, but it doesn't seem to particularly happen - I doubt they could easily pluck one from a tree.
Wow that’s amazing. Well spotted. I love to see snakes in their natural habitat but our native snakes are quite small. I’m not sure how I’d cope if I saw one this size.
