I'm doing a month of birds for my own personal challenge, but I just couldn't resist putting this in the middle of the month. This is a nesting box for the vulnerable little lorikeet, and this is the second year in a row it has been used by a tree snake. Looks rather smug doesn't it?
Wonderful and important part of the ecosystem here.
Tree snakes of course use hollows too, so it's not surprising - so far only 1 of 22 nesting boxes (some for the little lorikeet, some for the vulnerable squirrel glider) has been taken over by a snake, so it's fair I'm thinking.
Omw, what a fright to suddenly see those beady eyes staring at you! Fabulous capture and as you say, it does seem to be fair. I hope the birds are aware of it ;-)
@louannwarren I believe he has been hibernating in there over the winter, and probably still sleeps in there at night, maybe until things become really hot
@merrelyn me too! the little lorikeet is one of the smallest in that species and their numbers are so low I would rather this snake sticks to its usual diet of frogs, reptile eggs and small mammals for sure!
I am not a fan of snakes at all- I'd probably evict him to the ground where he usually nests- well, I'd have someone who's not afraid of snakes do it for me! I'd much rather see a Lorikeet or a squirrel in there. Great shot though!
