Day 22 Grand Canyon Rim to Rim Trip: Mesa Verde Point Lookout Trail
Monday, October 31.
I had breakfast and a nice hot shower and was ready to hit the road. I had a voicemail from Mesa Verde RV Resort and called to confirm my campsite for the next two nights. I drove about 225 miles and it took about 4 hours and once again I changed time zones… now I am two hours earlier than at home. No wonder I keep waking up so early. The drive took me back a good part of the way I had driven from Monument Valley a few days before. I arrived at Mesa Verde RV Park at 2:20 in the afternoon. I got the trailer set up and unhitched and headed to the Mesa Verde Visitor Center. I got a map of the park and a list of possible hikes. I chose the Point Lookout Trail, a 2.2 mile round trip hike. The trailhead was located in the campground which was closed for the season. There was only one car in the parking lot and I met the owner as he was returning to his car… he said I had the trail all to myself… nice! I hiked all the way to the point… the views were gorgeous all along the trail and at the point. There was a little snow on the ground and some beautiful orange leaves. As I came back down the trail I met a few people going up. I sure enjoyed the hike. As I was leaving the park the sun was setting and the colors were very pretty.
I got back to the camper and heated some water for one of my favorite backpacker meals - spaghetti and meat sauce… it was yummy and I had a cup of constant comment tea. There is a hard freeze tonight (12 hours below freezing) so I’ve got way too mush stuff inside the camper… it looks like a disaster area. I’m going to look at a few pictures tonight then finish watching Harry Potter & The Half Blood Prince… if I can stay awake long enough.
