I had dental surgery today... I'm getting an implant because my "baby" tooth is dead. I was not born with an adult tooth to take its place so for around 50 years the baby has been there. The surgeon extracted it and installed a titanium screw with a cap on it. I have to wait 3 or 4 months for the bone to grow around it and then I'll get a crown. I had IV sedation so I'm very tired. The freezing has worn off and it aches a bit despite the Advil I took. I get to eat "soft" foods for the next week.
@30pics4jackiesdiamond I've been warned for years that it would fail at some point. A few months ago it just felt off so I went to the dentist. He did some tests and declared it dead! He said many people only have baby teeth and that I was lucky to keep mine so long. I had to pay $2440 for the experience today and that doesn't even include the crown portion! Not a cheap procedure... sure hope my insurance covers it!
My daughter was born with TWO areas where baby teeth came out and NO adult teeth were going to go in. She is near the age where we can do implants, BUT she doesn't have enough bone growth to implant (so they would have to build a base). In the meantime, she has what's called a Maryland Bridge that holds two fake teeth in place but anchored to the neighboring teeth. It's a mess! And expensive. At some point, we'll see if we can culture some bone for implants, but yes, $$$$$$$$$. In the US, it's AWFUL!
Oh , I know what you are talking about . At least you are going to have a nice crown tooth. I have 2 missing adult molars. Well, way back they made "bridges" ...just not the same........ like Daryl O'Hare mentioned.
I had an implant a few years back in France, after having repeated abscesses underneath a crowned tooth. I was very nervous about the whole process, but found it to be amazingly pain free. The pain of the abscess was worse than anything. Still going strong 5 years later, so I just hope it continues to last! Hope yours is as successful - it looks great. And you're right - very expensive.
My daughter had to have an implant after her braces were taken off. It's much easier when you already had a tooth in that spot at some time. She didn't, so her process took almost 2 years. But, her teeth look great. @darylo That's what my daughter had to do also. She rejected her own jaw bone, but her body accepted the cow bone. Go figure. They had to make a special guide for the surgeon to use because her bone was so thin there. But, it worked. It's definitely expensive. I think we put about $20K into our daughter's mouth.
@homeschoolmom My mouth was the most expensive so far--a full jaw operation, two sets of braces, and splint therapy, but my daughter's missing two adult teeth is so far less than $20,000 but it will be if we graft bone to her jaw. :(
Ouch! My teen is missing *four* adult teeth, and at least two of the baby teeth are not looking to be all that excited about hanging around for the long term. I am not looking forward to her next orthodontist visit...
my dentist wanted to put implants in the gaps i had in my upper molars. but when she told me it would have to be re-done every five or six-years, i didnt hesitate to say no. i hate getting my teeth done, bad enough i have to go for cleaning every three months. plus i probably wouldn't be able to afford after retirement as the cost is really prohibitive. good luck with your dental work.
Teeth... I had an invisiligne orthodontics treatment during one year and it cost me an arm ! Dental health is so important and so expensive... hope everything is going well .
