July Thumbnail Challenge - B&W Shapes. Several triangles, a circle, a couple of diamonds & several squares and rectangles. I had to adjust levels to make it less washed out.
Hi there push-buddy Laura! :) Lots of shapes in this shot, well spotted. As you have other challenges underway, I will leave the subject completely up to you for your push challenge this week - but use the camera technique - off centre selective focus, ie the centre of the shot as you take it must be out of focus; don't crop it that way afterwards ;)) From what I can see on the web, your DMC-FZ48 has both manual & area select focus, but let me know if I am wrong. http://larzbolor.blogspot.com.au/2011_09_01_archive.html
There are some sample shots are at http://www.cruzine.com/2010/09/20/selective-focus/ I hope this explanation makes sense, let me know if it doesn't. Cheers, Lyn!

@ltodd It does have a button for Manual Focus but am not sure how to set it so that the centre is out of focus - I have been trying it but everything is either sharp or unsharp not just partly out of focus.

I am having a look at the manuals at http://www.fotoez.net/panasonic-lumix-dmc-fz47-fz48-digital-compact-camera-users-manual-owners-instruction-7231 - there seems to be a way to move the AF point (easier to start with than manually focusing), but I have not found the exact instructions ....yet :D

Adjacent to the shooting mode wheel is an Off/On slider switch. Flick this to On and the camera powers up in just over 1 second, the rear LCD bursting into life and that zoom extending to maximum wide angle setting, slightly proud of its protective barrel. The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ48's auto-focus system is even faster to determine focus than the already speedy FZ45, and there's no shutter delay to speak of when you take a shot, with full 12 megapixel resolution JPEGs committed to memory in a second. Just in front of this is a dedicated Focus button that lets you set the focus point anywhere in the frame – useful should you be shooting for example in anything other than Intelligent Auto mode. Located on the the slope that forms the top of the camera grip is the main shutter button. Springy to the touch, this is encircled by a lever for operating the zoom, the action of which is impressively smooth and mechanically quiet.

I think you need to be in P mode not fully auto?

1-area AF (Flexible / Scalable) on this page - http://panasonic.net/avc/lumix/compact/fz47_fz48/response.html
you will need to be out of fully auto shoot mode first.... but P will still calculate the exposure etc for you.

@ltodd I took an image of my thumbnail using AF Macro where I was able to move the area of the focus so the nail was sharp and everywhere else was out of focus. Thanks for your help.
