I specially drove out to this place to take the picture of a very old thatched cottage. It was only about a mile away but through the year this view has been impossible due to the leaves on the tree's. I suddenly realised that with the trees bare I might be able to capture it today.
It dates from about 1570 - 1595 and is in a wonderful condition for a building almost 450 years old. I was surprised to find it empty as somebody had been living in it every time I had driven by.
A quick investigation I found that it has just been sold for £460,000 ($720,000 US) and I expect some lucky family will be soon moving in. Saying that it looks like a new thatched roof will be needed soon.
Lovely shot - I agree, should be on a chocolate box or a biscuit tin. I remember a relative saying that they had a thatch roof on their cottage for a very, very long time. Never leaked. As soon as they modernized and put on a 'proper' roof, they have had nothing but leaks.
So glad you shared. I was so excited when I saw my first thatched cottage from a bus window as we travelled from Southampton to Stonehenge in 2010. Thanks for the link. Now I know what such a cottage looks like on the inside - so interesting. Happy New Year.
Happy New Year Heather
